Milestone Birthday – 7 year old – B07b

I love this Anniversary card by mariestamps!  So I changed it into a birthday card to go with my 7 year old fish themed cards. Love the idea of the leafed seaweed from the Two-Step Bird and snowflake Punch.  I used a toothbrush to splatter brown acrylic paint on to Crumb Cake cardstock.  One more fish card coming soon.

Here is the poem I used for this 7 year old card.
How I wish I were a fish!
My day would begin flapping my fins.
I'd make a commotion out in the ocean.
It would be cool to swim in a school.
In the sea, I'd move so free,
With just one thought: Don't get caught!
Happy 7th birthday!

American Girl Doll Mermaid Costume Tutorial AG040

I came across a Mermaid Tail pattern on Crafty Moms Share blog.  I decided to change it up a bit – I wanted my doll to stand, therefore I moved the tail pattern to the side of a skirt I created as shown in this diagram.

Turn waist down ½” and sew.

Insert 10” of elastic into casing.  Secure both ends.

Give elastic a tug then sew through all thicknesses at the halfway point to prevent elastic from twisting.

Sew from notch, around the tail and up to the waist.

Put a wee bit of stuffing into the tail.

Sew a line to keep the stuffing in place.

Mermaid Top for AG doll

I also liked the little tube top that Crafty Moms Share blog used.  She didn’t have any measurements so I just winged it.

If using stretchy fabric, cut it 4.5” by 14” long.  If using a firm fabric, cut it 4” by 14”.   I know the dolls chest only measures 11” but I like to allow lots extra and cut it off later.

When serging stretchy fabric into a tube, serge over a narrow piece of ribbon to prevent stretching. My pink fabric was very firm so there was no need to do that to it.

Loop 16” of ribbon or trim in half and place under the tube.

Bring the ends of the ribbon over the top of the tube and through the loop.

Pull tight and pin.  Try on the doll.  Make any adjustments.

Add Velcro and trim off excess.

Stitch through the ribbon loop to hold in place.

Put it back on the doll and pin the ribbon straps to fit.  Stitch.

Add a sew-on charm to center front.  Once it is on the doll, give the top and bottom a tug to fit.

American Girl Doll Apron and Oven Mitt Tutorial AG044

American Girl Doll Apron Tutorial

I started with the apron pattern on DaydreamDoll Boutique’s blog – scroll to the bottom of her post and click on Doll Chef Set Pattern and, of course, I had to switch it up a bit.  Here is what my pattern ended up looking like:

Cut a piece of interfacing 1” wide.  Serge to the top of the front.  Serge bottom edge of the back.

Press facing on the front under 1”.  Press bottom edge of back at 3/8”.  Add ric rac or any other trim.  Cot a strap 1.25” by 28” long.  Fold in half and serge the long edge.

Stack the aprons wrong sides together.  Open the top facing and bring the pocket to the front.  Pin in place.

With the front facing open, serge the armholes and side seams.

Cut neck strap 8” long.  Serge both short ends to clean finish.  Sew one end to bottom of facing.

Add a piece of soft Velcro to the other end of the neck strap.

Add hard Velcro to the facing only.  Turn facing to the wrong side and topstitch at the top and bottom.

Cut remaining strap in half.  With right sides together, attach at side seams.  Turn back and topstitch.

I used my loop turner to pull my serger tails back under the serged seam.

Tie knots at the ends of the straps.  Chalk mark and sew down center of the pocket.  Bartack.

The Velcro at the neck makes it very easy to put on or take off.

American Girl Doll Oven Mitt Tutorial

I started out using the oven mitt pattern from Daydream Doll Boutique’s blog however, I cut as one piece.  Trace it on to the wrong side of the fabric.  Do not cut it out.

Draw diagonal lines on the fabric about 5/8” apart.

Sew on the lines.

Cut out.  Serge across the top.

Press top under ¼”.

Insert 4” of 1/8” elastic.   Secure both ends.

Pin mitt right sides together and sew.  Clip, turn and press.

Milestone Birthday – 7 years old – B07a

For my 7 year old cards, I decided to use fish as the theme.  So, we will start out with Nemo!  Isn’t he just the cutest!  I kinda followed Niki's’s layout.  She used a retired butterfly punch for his tail.  I don’t have that punch so I used the Bigz Beautiful Butterflies die for mine.  I also followed Simple and Sincere’s tutorial for making a fish hook from a paper clip.  I needed to use over half the paper clip for mine.  I balled up a piece of wax paper and pounced the card with Bashful Blue ink for the sky.  I used the ¾” x 15/16” oval punch to cut the waves at the top of the blue DSP.

Here is the poem I used for this 7 year old card.
You’re a little fish, you like to swim
We can't catch you, 'cause you have fins
When you swim past your friends, we hear them say
Stop your swimming and come and play!
Happy 7th birthday!

Here is what I used to make Nemo.
Fins – Modern Label punch.
Tail - Bigz Beautiful Butterflies die.
Face – large oval punch.
White part of eyes – ½” circle punch.
Black part of eyes – large eye on the Owl Builder punch.

Cardstock : Tangerine Tango, Whisper White, Petal Patch DSP 2006.
Ink: Chocolate Chip, Certainly Celery, Tangerine Tango, Basic Gray, Bashful Blue.
Accessories: white gel pen, Little Sizzlits leaves, mounts, sponge, wax paper, paper clip, Going Gray marker, Rhinestones.
Punches: 1/2” Circle, 1” Circle, 1-1/4” scallop Circle, Owl Builder, Bird Builder,  3/4”x15/16” Oval, Large Oval, 1/16” hole,  scallop oval,

AG036 American Girl Doll Peplum Skirt Tutorial and Bodysuit Tutorial

I know I got the idea for this AG doll Peplum skirt from 18inchdollclothesz.com/blog but I can’t seem to pin point it now.  I can’t even find a Search button on her Blog!  Anyways, this is what I did.

American Girl Doll Peplum Skirt Tutorial

I cut my pieces as:

Waistband – cut 3.5” w x 13.5” long.  Fold in half.

Ruffle – cut 5” w x 26” long.  Fold in half.

Skirt – cut 4.5” w x 13.5” long.  Press hem ½”.

Chalk mark the quarter points of the skirt and ruffle.

Gather ruffle the Nancy Zieman way – I’m using a different skirt to demo this.  Put the fabric under the pressure foot.  Draw up the bobbin thread so it is on top of the piece to be gathered.

Pull the bobbin so it is a bit more than the length of the piece you are gathering – in this case, we want it a bit longer than 26”.

Set your machine to a zigzag and zigzag over the bobbin thread.

When you are done, it should look like this. Notice that the machine zigged on one side of the bobbin thread and zagged on the other side thus leaving our bobbin thread encased.

Now pull the bobbin thread until all the quarter marks match the garment.

Sew the ruffle to the skirt.

Since the waistband is the same length as the skirt, simply sew it on top of the ruffle.

Serge to clean finish seam.

Top stitch about 1/8” away from the ruffle.

Make a 3/8” casing at waistband for elastic.

Feed 10” of ¼” wide elastic through the waistband, secure with pins and sew.

Sew center back seam at ¼”.  Serge for a clean finish. Hem skirt at ½”.

Cotton Bodysuit

I used the same body suit pattern for this outfit as I did for AG006, however, I did add about an inch onto the length and an inch onto the side seams as I made these from cotton and added some buttons for decoration.

I cut a lining for the front and back.
